This piece was submitted by Jeffery Stevenson of the comic Brat-halla.
It was originally a reply to a forum thread, but I wanted to pull it out here to make sure no one missed it. It contains some great advice.

In response to a request for a guide to hand-lettering, I prepared the brief overview below. But, as you’ll soon see, I’m not such a wonderful letterer (especially when you look at my lettering this big). I am, however, a pretty good researcher, and much of this material was gathered when I was preparing to write “The Everything Cartooning Book.”
The amazing Chris Eliopoulos, Webcomics.com subscriber and letterer for Marvel Comics, will be writing a step-by-step guide that will run here in the near future.

We’re going to approach the Banner Ad Hot Seat a little differently than the Web Design Hot Seat. Instead of taking each ad on an individual basis, I’m going to group a few ads together that I think share some common properties and talk about them as a group. I’ve already written about some of the Do’s and Don’t’s of good Web advertising, so if you missed that, you might want to take a moment and review it.

For those that don’t know, my background is primarily in management consulting. It was a career filled with two-week stints in hostile environments that, in short, needed to figure out how to achieve X with the means of Y. Even though I specialized in enterprise technology, each segment was a little different and each company had their own way of doing things. In order to cope with these variances within tight timetables, every consultant had these very broad-stroke models beat into our heads to help understand how certain industries ticked. Businesses are businesses, but there are certain base-layer truisms across the board, often portrayed as simplified charts or graphs that give an easy-to-understand perspectives that, although usually fitting no single company, gave you an understanding on what the landscape was.

Your blog is the heartbeat of your community-building effort. The comic brings your readers in, but your blog makes them feel as if they belong. Unfortunately, it’s incredibly hard to jam both into the “first screen” of a typical reader.

If you’re running ads on a CPM (cost per thousand views) basis, it’s in your best interest to generate as many pageviews as possible. Priority One, of course, is to do the best comic you possibly can. Second on the list is to engender a sense of community among your fans. Third is maximizing your archives, and last month, I discussed a few thoughts about maximizing your pageviews by finding creative ways to send your readers back through your archives.
