When I was visiting Seattle, I talked a little with Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins about their process for making Penny-Arcade. They don’t approach things the same way that many of us do. In fact, I would say that when it comes time to actually create Penny-Arcade, Mike and Jerry really aren’t working on a webcomic per se. They’re just making Penny-Arcade. Whatever that is, however anyone who views it feels the need to label it. It is what it is, and their process bears very little resemblance to what I do on a daily basis.

This is the lost episode of webcomics weekly, forgotten in time for a couple of weeks. This was recorded before our trip to SCAD. So yeah. not terribly old. It wasn’t lost very long.
QUESTION: I have a well-developed cartoon character and theme and would like to publish them. I met a local publisher of a magazine who wants me to let him publish my work. He cannot pay me anything now. How can I know what to charge and how do I get a standard contract so that I will be paid if and when the mag really takes off and is successful.

One of the best ways to encourage media coverage of your comic is to do the work for them. A well-written press release makes it easy for a media outlet — print, radio, TV and Web — to help spread your message.

A comic-convention panel can be an excellent opportunity to get people excited about your comic, but unless you do a good job of presenting the panel, you’re going to wind up boring people. And no one is going to check out your work after you’ve bored them silly for an hour.
