August To-Do List
We’re well into the second half of the year, believe it or not. Now’s a great time to start planning the rest of your 2011.

Besides Marvel Studios, there was one clear winner at Comic Con International this past week in San Diego: Square. Time after time, I kept hearing about exhibitors who has made the switch — either voluntarily or because their existing merchant-services device has failed them — and they were thrilled. The content you are trying to access is only available to members.
The e-mail was rather direct.
Subject: an oppurtunity for growth in the comic book industry
hello, i have a marketing company specializing in comics (the first of its kind) and if you are interested you can contact me at empirecitymarketing.com
Checking out their site, I can see some pretty unique pitches.
Why spend thousands of dollars on a publicist?
With a full marketing/publicity campaign spanning six to twelve weeks, our priority is to ensure that readers know about your book. How do we do this? For each campaign we use our Multiverse of Blogs, News Sites and Forums to launch a comprehensive Internet Marketing/Publicity Campaign! If ALL Comic Book Ads run in Comics, video games, and toy magazines then it can become saturated; and Ad saturation leads to a decrease in Ad effectiveness on mass media. Armed with the U.S. Comic Book and Graphic Novel Market. (Note: the text ends there)
I made initial contact with a e-mail response to the original solicitation, during which I asked a few questions. They responded (and some of those responses are listed below). However repeated attempts to set up a detailed phone and/or e-mail interview were unsuccessful.
For example, I asked what the “multiverse” (mentioned above) is, Jason Matthews, who identified himself as the owner of Empire City Marketing, responded: “The multiverse and the sales network are two things I would love explain over the phone if you have some time today. I am typing this on an iPhone and I feel like I will leave details out.”
From the site:
We use previously underestimated marketing channels for Comic Book Ads when launching a new property. We hit the mainstream readers who are already plugged into the information channels; but also, and mostly importantly, we find new readers through alternate channels such as web and print.
What are “underestimated marketing channels”? Web and print are alternate channels? Alternate to what?

Hitch it: Promotion
Skar does an admirable job of promoting his comic every day. From Facebook and Twitter upates to engaging his readers on the blog under the comic, Skar does an excellent job of self-promotion.

Hitch It: Work that niche
Tone Deaf has developed into a very good niche-targeted comic. The updates stand alone — requiring no backstory. The writing is aimed squarely at a group of people that the cartoonist is clearly very familiar with. It may seem in-jokey to outsiders, but this comic is a terrific example of knowing one’s audience and playing to them directly.

Because you asked for it!

Hitch it: Engaging readers
One of the core strengths of Reality Amuk is that it gives readers plenty of clear opportunities to engage in the comic/site if they see something they like. There are icons below the comic encouraging all sorts of site/comic interaction and there are links above the comic that offer even more options.

Hitch it: Clean Art
I like the visual appeal of Treading Ground. It’s drawn cleanly and clearly. The panel compositions usually work well, and the coloring is executed in a very smart way. I really like how this comic connects with the reader through its visuals.

Meatshield
Hitch It: Typography
The word balloons in MeatShield are very graceful, and they fit deftly into the panel compositions. This isn’t damning with faint praise. Word balloons are deceptively difficult, and an awful lot of webcomics suffer from crappy balloons. This is a comic that does word balloons right. The content you are trying to access is only available to members.
Hitch it: Visual Storytelling
I love how Adam uses camera angles and gestures to provide meaning — even subtext — to the story. Reading the comic is very cinematic in feel, and I think the story gets a boost as a result.
