OpenType vs. TrueType is a possibility I hadn’t considered, Brad. I’ll look into it. Thanks for checking. 🙂

Rob ChambersParticipantThe holidays are over now; let’s kick this thing back into gear! I’d like to have the next Webcomics Study Group session within the next two weeks. Joel and Reine made excellent points about assignments, so that the session doesn’t ramble too much and fall down a rathole. Here are some broad categories – everyone please chime in with your own two cents.

Merchandising
Composition
Writing DialogueAs with last time, it will be via Google Hangouts and will most likely be in the evening (I’m on the West Coast, so East Coasters are looking at something around 9:30 – 10:00pm). If you’re interested in participating, et me know what days and times work best for you.

Rob ChambersParticipantNo problem, Joel! Happy to do it!
Rob Chambers
Rob ChambersParticipantNo Problem, Sarah. 🙂
Rob Chambers
Rob ChambersParticipantIn a nutshell, it works like this:
First, a webcam is needed. Since most computers made in the past 5 years or so have these, I don’t anticipate this being a problem.
Second, someone with a GMail account (in this case, me) sets up a Hangout and sends out invitations. If you have a Gmail or Google+ account, you’re all set and all you have to do is accept the invitation. If you don’t have one of those accounts, an invitation will be sent to your email address that you provided me to join Hangouts.
Third, We talk about webcomics and whatever may be bugging us about them. 🙂
If you need more info, click here.
I do think we need some ground rules, though:
1) The Golden Rule applies (do unto others, etc.) or, if this works better for you, Wheaton’s Law (Don’t be a dick). 🙂
2) Since people are likely to be calling in from several different time zones, I propose that we limit the first session to one hour.
3) A technical request: if you have normally music playing while you’re online, please either turn it down or off during the session.Let me know if anyone has any other questions.

Rob ChambersParticipantFor everyone interested in the study group: shoot me an email at rob@meatshield.net so I can send you a Hangouts invite on Thursday night. Otherwise I’m just going to be sitting in front of my Mac twiddling my thumbs. 😉
Rob Chambers
Rob ChambersParticipantSounds like Google Hangouts is the way to go. I’ll figure out how all the particulars work and post whatever other info we need to get this sucker off the ground. 🙂
Rob Chambers
Rob ChambersParticipantOk, sounds good to me! How does next Thursday (11/13) at 7:00PM UTC-8/10:00PM UTC-4 sound? Anyone else?
Rob Chambers
Rob ChambersParticipantI’m commenting again to bump this up a bit, but also to try to lock down a time and method for this video conference study group. I’m going to assume that this week is pretty much out, as it is short notice and there is also Halloween on Friday. So, what do you all think about November 4th at 7:00PM PST? As far as video options goes, I’m torn between Skype and Google Hangouts. Both are fine, but you need to have a Google account for the latter to be viable. That is most likely not a problem for most folks and is the option I’m leaning more towards, but I’m open-minded.Let me know! 🙂
Rob Chambers
Rob ChambersParticipantAll right then, this sounds like it’s on it’s way to getting started. Here’s what I propose for scheduling: 7:00PM UTC-8/10:00PM UTC-4. What day of the week would we like to do this and how frequently? Weekly? Bi-weekly? Monthly?
Rob Chambers
Rob ChambersParticipantAlso, Brad had commented on this earlier in this thread; Brad, were you interested as well?
Rob Chambers
Rob ChambersParticipantOkay, now it just comes down to logistics. Here is what we have as far as avilability:
-
Joel: Available after 4:00PM, UTC -4 (I’m assuming somewhere on the East Coast of America or Canada)
Sarah: Available after 9:00PM, UTC -5 (Ditto)
Ryan: availability is variable; unknown time zone, I am assuming somewhere in either Australia or Asia?
Me: available after 8 PM,UTC -8 (Los Angeles, CA)So, when and how do you folks want to do this? Also, do we need to download any sort of desktop mirroring app for Skype or whatever so we can show our work to each other, or do you figure links will do??
By hook or by crook, this WILL happen. 🙂
Rob Chambers
Rob ChambersParticipantIs anyone still interested in doing this? I am, for the record. We just need to set up a time and venue (Skype, Google Hangouts, etc.) I’d like this to not fall by the wayside. Thoughts?
Rob Chambers
Rob ChambersParticipantI have no problem using Skype or Hangouts, I’m flexible.
So, when would you all like to do this? 🙂Rob Chambers
Rob ChambersParticipantMy schedule is fairly flexible, although anytime after 5:00PM Pacific time during the week is spoken for until about 8:30 (family time). Also, I agree with John’s suggestion about using Google Hangouts. Sorry I didn’t respond to this sooner, but I am still enthusiastic about this. Let me know! 🙂
