ParticipantThank you for all your input. I went with my gut instead of my logic and bought a 27-inch iMac with 32 GB of memory. I also now have an iPhone 8. I feel a bit like I’ve joined the Borg, forever bonded to the Apple universe. (That last sentence was a joke.)
I’ve hardly touched the capabilities of this machine, merely using it for a few commissioned illustrations. Most of my recent work has been with traditional media: ink, watercolor, Bristol, and watercolor paper.
Just one problem with the iMac: the font on Photoshop is so small it’s nearly impossible to read. I’ve explored forums, and I haven’t found a way to fix this.
Thanks again to both of you.

Participant@dhlarson Thanks to the setup of the forums at webcomics.com, I got an email containing the entire text of your reply. (Whew.)
I’ve been working with Windows 10 (not the Pro edition) for several months now. It’s livable, but I will definitely check out Pro. The regular Windows 10 regularly has bugs of varying sizes, refusing to recognize an accessory, continually resetting my file view, occasionally failing to close this or that program.
The no-maintenance of Mac calls to me because I do have a store very near me. If I choose a Mac, I believe I’ll have no problem using my Intuos 4 (PTK-840).
I’ll also look at NewEgg and the models you’ve suggested. Goal: to make my final selection this week.
Thank you again for your clear and helpful comments.

Participant@dhlarson Thank you for your in depth and interesting advice — I’m not sure why your comment disappeared from the forum. Your research has obviously been deep.
1) A desktop will provide the best value. This is for my home, not travel.
2) I am not going to build a computer, but I appreciate the advice. I don’t play many games. My workhorse computer needs to smoothly run Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and Manga Studio.
3) For me, the Apple / PC battle for me comes down to reliability and technical support when things go bad. I’ve had bad tech support experiences with Lenovo and Dell, which aren’t deal breakers, but they make me cautious.
4) Windows 10 Pro? I hadn’t considered that.
5) Having to rebuy my programs isn’t as big a barrier as it used to be, with Adobe on the cloud. However, it would cost me; I’d lose Manga Studio and my aged-but-reliable fleet of Microsoft programs. Thanks again.
