Mailbag: Where to draw the line on copyright?

Q.: I understand a bit about copyright infringement, but I’m not clear about the rules regarding a reference.

There’s a PVP collection called “PVP Reloaded” that features some Matrix-esque imagery; obviously this is fine, but at what point does a reference cross the line?

What if I have a strip called “The Room” and I want to name my collection “Room County?” What if my STRIP is called “Room County?” Does the situation get better or worse if I make no other reference to the material I’m cribbing from (like if “PVP Reloaded” didn’t have any of the Matrix clothes/aesthetic, would it seem like Scott was taking credit for the concept of calling something “_______ Reloaded?”).
